Why does everyone in here assume the CnD request has ANYTHING to do with the NAME? It never states that specifically. It's possible, though. Even though Blizzard DOES provide the tools and ENOURAGES mods, most mods are named to reflect the map or conflict within the context of the RTS battles they contain. Whereas this mod has been PURPOSEFULLY designed to be the StarCraft version of Warcraft, and is named as such.

Don't get me wrong. I love it and would jump at the change to play this mod. But, again, this mod has been CONCIENTIOUSLY created to "LOOK and FEEL" like World of Warcraft. Please re-read that sentence. That, I think is the crux of the issue here, as far as Blizzard is concerned. IANAL, but in many issues with patent and copywrite conflicts, "LOOK and FEEL" is at the heart of the issue.

And hell, you don't have to take my word for it. You ALL know it. Hell, that is the REASON we are all, including myself, Jazzed to the Tits about it. *BECAUSE* it looks and feels just like World of Warcraft, with Startcraft theme.

To sum up, it's not the "Starcraft" license Blizzard is concerned with here. Like you all said, they provide the tools and encourage mods. But this mod I suspect, (in their minds, not mine) crosses the line because it is a direct "rip-off" of World of Warcraft.

So, please continue the debate, I love this as much as you do. Please just don't lose sight of the forest through the trees.

Of course, I'm just speculating as much as the rest here, are.

Peace out!
Battlenun.

We all assume its the name because that is the only logical answer. General gameplay and style can NOT be copyrighted that is why there are, as so many people put it(even though I personally hate the word), WoW clones; it is impossible to copyright general gameplay. Now yes specific gameplay, as in the game as a whole, can be copyrighted(only once it is created and what they call a hard copy is present). However, basic gameplay such as UI and style and even most mechanics can not be copyrighted.

On top of that when dev tools are given to the public they realize the possibilities of what people can do with them are endless and with the tools also comes(as they've stated in their copyright) that, so long as no profit is made, the public is free to do as they please within the means of the tools. Thus, the name is the only thing that could possibly be it because names are trademarks which can be acquired without any more than filling out a simple form and paying a fee. Unlike copyright for written work or art which needs to be created first and then submitted for copyright approval.

Oh, and sure I do agree it is true that Blizzard is flipping out for more than just that reason as Ryan stated in another thread they were afraid it was being created by another means instead of the mod tools. That, given Blizzard's history, does not surprise me because they saw something that is drawing the attention of a lot of people and realized how excited people were getting over it and naturally their lawyers started panicking and throwing everything they had at him before asking questions because that is what they do... I seem to recall them sueing many many people for many many things. They want to protect their assets and with even the smallest inkling that copyright infingement is happening they send out the lawyer army to put a stop to it before all the evidence is there. By the way, since this is being made with tools created by the devs anything Blizzard related that takes place in it is technically legal and again as such even if they are attacking Ryan for more than just the title, by law, the title is all they can really put a stop to.

Everyone is also missing that there was no "Cease and Desist". The only thing that happened is that a few YouTube videos were marked as infringing on copyright law. In all likelyhood, Blizzard wasn't even aware of this happening until all these threads popped up and/or they received the e-mail from Ryan.

Blizzard isn't the company it once was. The point is that the only one who could be blamed is Activision.

Blizzard is a big company, Activision is even bigger. Miscommunication happens when they get that big. I don't blame them at all. They had every right to take down the video.

The main problem is that Activision will try to shutdown or stop any mod which in future could be potential cash cow. The Battle.net 2, Starcraft 2 being split in 3 parts, no LAN, its just their way to pump the money from franchise. The fear they have is that someone might do things better from them and that they couldn't get money. Check why Blizzard is one of the companies which shutdowns mods. Neither EA or others do it. They forgot who helped them become what they are today. Today they are throwing dust in the faces of their royal fans and customers with their decisions. Any company that becomes too rich, tends to act like they were taken off leash. Personally I'm disappointed with Blizzard in general and their current politics. 12 years for new remake of old game is absurd with the amount of money they have.

Blizzard and Activision showed us not the first time, that all that counts for them is money...

Like dude above said, without us, they would be jobless or making some Sims for little girls... They live from our money, and they are faking us right in the a$$ with bulshyt like that...

They went rage after relasing videos from that WoS mod...
Idiots...nothing more...

I hope one of them will read that thread, and will think about it, in how big and shitty company he works for...

This is too funny. Now there are blog features coming out about how the mod video was quashed. It does make sense though that the banhammer only came down because of the video's nomenclature. Otherwise it should have stayed on if it was named differently as they do hold some sort of copyright to the name "World of Starcraft".

Its understandable at that point on the why's as to why the youtube vid got the banhammer.

Don't you hate "If you ____ then copy+paste this into your signature" sigs? If so, copy+paste this into your signature.

I just love all the misleading article titles surrounding this to make them punchier to drive views up. The article claiming "Blizzard squishes World of Starcraft mod" is a prime example. And then going and saying that the only thing that was squished were the Youtube videos.

I am going to go out on a limb here to say...

Judging by how many times today Ryan has logged into his profile according to the forum profile, and the drastic decrease in his posting activity, while obviously in communications with the two big wigs. I would like to think he is probably privy to some groundbreaking information, but cannot disclose anything further than he already has. Would anybody else agree? or maybe am I just a little too hopeful that there is a light at the end of the SC2 modding or Blizzard's next MMO release tunnel...
